As our 8th grade students begin to set their sites toward high school and beyond, the conversations about college and career become increasing relevant.

During the last two weeks of February and the first week in March all students at Cooper Academy will have had the opportunity to conduct independent research using California Career Zone (cacareerzone.org). This website allows students to explore careers in depth and begin to match possible career choices to their interests.

As part of this guidance lesson provided by the Counselor, students answered 180 questions about their current interests. They were then given an interest profile report and a list of occupations that match their interest profile. Students then began to independently research their potential careers. They read descriptions about each career, learned the education necessary to land a job in that field, the current average salary (as well as the low and high end salary figures) and watched videos showing exactly what each career had to offer.

Additionally, students were able to look up common college majors for each career and begin to explore colleges and universities that offered programs of study to prepare them for their potential career choices.

Each Cooper Academy scholar left with a username and password for California Career Zone that they can then use to access their profile and all the tools available to them at any time, anywhere.

Cooper Academy also has plan in the works to tally all the career interests our students have and work with our community and business partners to have a career fair with participants representative of the interests of all of our students.

<![CDATA[COLLEGE: Making It Happen]]>Wed, 10 Apr 2013 23:40:07 GMThttp://www.cooperacademyfresno.org/counseling-blog/college-making-it-happenPicture
Thinking about and planning for college can often times be an incredibly stressful activity. However, one of the easiest ways to make this process less stressful is to start early!

Starting to plan for college in middle school and ideally in elementary school is a great way to not only prepare students, but parents as well. The amount of information regarding financial aid, A-G requirements, AP and IB courses, etc. is often incredibly overwhleming for parents and students alike.
In an attempt to clarify this process and educate parents and students on these subjects, Fresno Unified School District is offering COLLEGE: Making It Happen workshops to all middle school students. These events will cover some of the topics listed above and will offer some clarity around areas of confusion for parents. The intial workshop at the High School will give a great overview of information regarding college, financial aid, and transition to high school.

Additionally, FUSD will be offering a second COLLEGE: Making It Happen workshop on Saturday, April 27th from 9:00 - 12:30pm at Fresno State Univeristy. This event will go more indepth and the workshops that will be offered are:
    1. Preparing for High School and Beyond
    2. What is FAFSA and Financial Aid?
    3. Middle School: Study Skills, Time Management and Homework
    4. College Campus Tour

This event is a tremendous opportunity to learn valuable information and tour a great public institution in Fresno State.

WHEN: Saturday, April 27th, 2013
TIME: 9:00-12:30pm
WHERE: CSU, Fresno (Fresno State) 2485 E San Ramon Fresno, CA
